The curriculum for this course will focus on proper execution of exercises commonly performed in aerobics classes, such as squats, lunges, pushups, dumbbell rows, tricep kickbacks, lateral raises, and trunk work. Additional topics may include selection of exercises, muscular balance, combining strength training with aerobic conditioning, and flexibility. Special attention will be given to students' questions and problems. This information will be taught in hands-on lecture format, and no testing will be required. Questions from the group are encouraged.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Introduction, review of objectives and goals of the course. Discussion of correct posture, neutral spine. Warmup techniques. Define compound movements and discuss their importance in a strength training program. Handouts.
SQUAT: Execution, emphasis on spinal stabilization and correct foot, knee, and hip mechanics. Discussion of common foot and knee stability problems and their possible causes and remedies. Variations for using weights. Open question and answer.
PUSHUP: Kinesiology and execution, emphasis on scapular and spinal positioning, plane of movement, elbow positioning for joint integrity. Many variations. Common problems, verbal cues, and spotting. Progression and use of unstable surfaces. Explosive variations. Q & A.
BENT OVER ROW: Mechanics and execution, emphasis on scapular movement and correct spine position. Common problems and descriptive phrases to overcome them. Variations. Q & A.
LUNGE: Mechanics and execution, emphasis on femoral rotation and stability at the hip. Variations - reverse, forward, side, diagonal. Contraindications and modifications. Verbal cues and thought patterns that aid in execution and prevention of anterior tibial translation. ACL injury prevention. Safety concerns and appropriateness of the movement. Q & A.
ABDOMINAL CURL AND REVERSE CURL: Kinesiology and execution. Specific phrases to use when teaching. Modifications, safety concerns, contraindications. Q & A.
BACK EXTENSION: Execution, emphasis on body position and correct motion of the spine. Comparison between back extension and glute/ham raise. Contraindications and range-of-motion issues. Teaching techniques and verbal cues. Q & A.
TRICEP KICKBACK: Execution, emphasis on body position. Explanation of gravity's line of pull and the futility of the standing version of this exercise. Modifications and range-of-motion issues. Teaching techniques and verbal cues. Q & A.
SHOULDER RAISES: Lateral, front, and multi-planar variations. Explanation of the scapular plane and appropriate modifications. Impingement syndrome, proper humeral rotation, and other safety issues will be discussed. Q & A.
