EXERCISES FOR EXPLOSIVE POWER

  1. Students will learn the physiological and neurological basis for how explosive training works, and will be able to assess a client's readiness to begin including explosive and/or plyometric exercises in his or her strength training program.
  2. Students will learn an appropriate progression of explosive exercises.
  3. Students will be exposed to the proper execution of various explosive and plyometric strength training exercises, including the Olympic lifts.

COURSE OUTLINE:

I. Plyometrics defined, neurological principles of how plyometric training works. Handouts.

II. Assessing a client's readiness for explosive and/or plyometric exercises, including current research.

III. Technique Section 1 - Basic Plyometric Progression. Demonstration and discussion of proper execution of:

  • Correct landing technique and foot strike mechanics
  • Bounding
  • Hopping
  • Skipping
  • Tuck jumps
  • Depth jumps

IV. Exercise Programming - Warmup techniques, appropriate training volume and foot contacts, frequency, overload.

V. Technique Section 2 - Demonstration and discussion of proper execution of:

  • Squat press
  • Squat throw
  • Overhead medicine ball throw
  • Weighted calf jumps

VI. Technique Section 3 - Demonstration and discussion of proper execution of:

  • Push press/jerk
  • Hang clean
  • Power clean
  • Snatch

**Certified fitness professionals attending this workshop are eligible to receive .3 CEUs for ACE, ACSM, NSCA, and NFPT. Most other major fitness organizations accept ACE-approved courses for continuing education credits.
